Full Name: Katherine “Kitty” Pryde
Code Name: Shadowcat
Affiliation: X-Men
Age: 16
Place of Birth: Deerfield, Illinois
Detailed Description of Mutation: Can make her body, and anything she is touching, intangible. This allows her to pass through solid matter, and for objects or weapons to pass through her body without causing her harm. While “phasing”, Kitty is still susceptible to psionic attacks, and can only move through an object as long as she can hold her breath. She can also destroy electrical systems by phasing through them, and has the ability to walk on air while intangible.
Played by: Ellen Page
Personality (at least two good paragraphs): Kitty is the epitome of a normal teenage girl. She’s friendly, energetic, and values her friends very much. She can be awkward at times, often sticking her foot in her mouth or babbling when she’s nervous.
She’s self conscious, often feeling inadequate in comparison with many of the other girls at school, and extremely intelligent. She’s trustworthy and honest, although that could be partially because she’s a horrible liar.
Overall History (at least two good paragraphs):
Kitty Pryde had a normal life and a normal family, though she was far from normal herself. Due to her extreme intelligence, she was able to skip several grades in school, even taking college level courses when she was barely in her teens. At the age of thirteen she started getting almost incapacitating headaches, but scared and not wanting to worry her parents, she didn’t tell anyone about them. It wasn’t until one day she was attempting to sleep on in her room only to awaken in the basement that she realised the headaches had been a precursor to her developing mutation.
Knowing how different others treated her because of her intelligence, she was afraid of how they’d react to this new development, so she kept it a secret. But one can only make excuses so often about how they fell through the floor, or moved objects through solid matter.
Eventually, Kitty sat down and spoke to her parents about her abilities, and they decided to send their only daughter to Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, where she could get help with her powers, and lead as normal a life as possible.
Writing Sample (4 good paragraphs OF THE CHARACTER YOU ARE APPLYING FOR):
Evolution. It was happening every day, all around them, though maybe not in the way that most people perceived the term. Perhaps ‘change’ was better suited. Every day something changed, often something so small and miniscule that nobody noticed, but it happened. These past few weeks, though, the changes were far from small and miniscule. The changes were huge, life changing; world changing. First Dr. Grey’s death, then the announcement of the cure. Then Mr. Summers was killed, and the Professor, then Dr. Grey... again. It was almost too much to take.
Kitty missed the times when her biggest worry was getting an A in physics.
It totally wasn’t fair! And of all the changes, the one that was slowly reversing, the one that wasn’t permanent, was the cure. It was probably a good thing, to remove it from the equation before it became a threat to mutantkind, before it became mandatory, but she felt bad for those who had chosen to take it.
It just wasn’t fair. She hated change. Why the cure? Why couldn’t the deaths be reversed instead? She knew it was a stupid question, but she couldn’t help it. Why couldn’t she have, like, time travelling powers? Or the ability to resurrect people, but like they had never died, not like zombies. But no, she could walk through walls. Woo, that was helpful.
Trying to wipe away her tears even as they continued to fall, Kitty leaned over and slipped on her black shoes, black like the rest of her outfit. Black like death, and like the storm clouds that hung overhead. Getting to her feet, she took a shaky breath and made her way outside where the memorial service was taking place.
It was time. Time to say goodbye. Time for more change.
